Download and read online Motherhood in the Media in PDF and EPUB This book examines contemporary media stories about women who kill their children. By analyzing media texts, motherhood blogs, and journalistic interviews, the book seeks to understand better maternal violence and the factors that lead women to harm their children. The central thesis of this book is that media practices have changed dramatically during the past 50 years, as has society’s views on "appropriate" feminine behavior, yet definitions of characteristics of good mothers remain largely defined by 1950s sit coms, Victorian ideals, and Christian theology. The book contends that in spite of media saturation in American society, and the media’s increased opportunities to tell complex and nuanced stories, news media narratives continue to situate maternal violence as rare, unfathomable, and unpredictable. The news media’s shift in focus—from public service to profit-making industry—has encouraged superficial coverage of maternal violence as reporters look for stories that sell, not stories that explain. Motherhood blogs, in contrast, offer an opportunity for women to tell their own stories about motherhood, based on experience. Interviews with journalists offer insights into how the structure of their jobs dictates media coverage of this intimate form of violence.

Download and read online Holy Rollers in PDF and EPUB Holy Rollers: Murder & Madness in Oregon's Love Cult is a story that has everything a good read should have: sex, religion, insanity, the downfall of prominent families, murder and sensational court trials. And all of it is true. In 1903 Edmund Creffield lured most of Corvallis’s Salvation Army Soldiers to his church, The Brides of Christ. One of them, he preached, was destined to be the mother of the next Christ, and like the first Mary, she would be a virgin. Even those sitting next to their children could be considered virgins in the eyes of God if they were “purified,” he said. So orgies—in the name of God and purification—were held. Mothers were debauched in front of their daughters, and daughters were debauched in front of their mothers. And after all had been debauched—purified—Creffield instructed the women and girls “to submit themselves to the lust of other men.” They did this in private. In public some spent days lying flat on the floor, face down. Some refused to eat, and some locked themselves in a closet. Eventually, most were committed to the insane asylum, and men went gunning for Creffield. Those involved in the Holy Roller story weren’t just any men and women, but highly respected men and women, men and women who were some of the leading pioneers in Oregon, God-fearing, decent men and women, not the sort you would expect to be lured into a sex cult and involved in multiple murders. That makes Holy Rollers not just a story about mass insanity, but also a cautionary tale. Cults have been around since the beginning of recorded history, will always be with us, and anyone can be lured into one. The methods Creffield used to control people are similar to the methods used by Jim Jones, David Koresh, and others. The eBook version of Holy Rollers has over 100 photos and newspaper front pages, book group discussion topics, links to newspaper articles, insane asylum records and information about cults and brainwashing.

Download and read online The Trials of Laura Fair in PDF and EPUB On November 3, 1870, on a San Francisco ferry, Laura Fair shot a bullet into the heart of her married lover, A. P. Crittenden. Throughout her two murder trials, Fair's lawyers, supported by expert testimony from physicians, claimed that the shooting was the result of temporary insanity caused by a severely painful menstrual cycle. The first jury disregarded such testimony, choosing instead to focus on Fair's disreputable character. In the second trial, however, an effective defense built on contemporary medical beliefs and gendered stereotypes led to a verdict that shocked Americans across the country. In this rousing history, Carole Haber probes changing ideas about morality and immorality, masculinity and femininity, love and marriage, health and disease, and mental illness to show that all these concepts were reinvented in the Victorian West. Haber's book examines the era's most controversial issues, including suffrage, the gendered courts, women's physiology, and free love. This notorious story enriches our understanding of Victorian society, opening the door to a discussion about the ways in which reputation, especially female reputation, is shaped.

Download and read online Beyond Obsession in PDF and EPUB The chilling true story of a beautiful violin prodigy, her devoted boyfriend, and the devastating family secrets that led to a brutal murder. Joyce Aparo seemed to be the perfect single mother. She doted on her sixteen-year-old daughter, Karin, encouraging her musical ability and lavishing affection on her. But behind closed doors, Joyce was a terror. For thirteen years, she beat Karin savagely, kept her away from other children, and demeaned her relentlessly. When Karin met the troubled yet brilliant Dennis Coleman, the two fell head-over-heels into lustful infatuation. But Joyce disapproved—so she had to die. On August 5, 1987, Joyce’s body was found under a bridge near the Connecticut–Massachusetts border. She had been strangled, and was covered in bruises, with paper stuffed in her mouth and pantyhose knotted around her throat. The police investigation soon dragged her horrific treatment of Karin into the open, and the teenage lovers became the prime suspects. Dennis eventually confessed to the murder, testifying that Karin begged him to kill her mother. But Karin had a very different story to tell, claiming to have no knowledge of Dennis’s plans. Was she manipulating the police the same way she manipulated her former boyfriend, or was she an innocent victim? Based on meticulous research, court transcripts, and interviews with the survivors, Beyond Obsession is the definitive account of an American tragedy and the basis for a popular TV movie starring Victoria Principal and Emily Warfield.
