Download and read online Soul of the South in PDF and EPUB My book, Soul of the South, includes thirty short stories ranging from general fiction; military, everyday drama, to children’s stories some of which use animal characters. My premier story ‘The Pecan Tree’ is a fictionalized account of a soldier in General Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson’s army returning home from the Battle of New Orleans through west Tennessee in 1815. There has stood a huge pecan tree in Natchez Trace State Park for many years supposedly planted by a soldier of the returning army. It was reputed to be the largest and oldest pecan tree in America. Sadly, a few years ago one of our many tornadoes destroyed it. There is another story I read as a boy that stated a sixteen year old volunteer with the militia Jackson headed in his many Indian wars refused his sergeants order to pick up biscuit crumbs that he had thrown on the ground in front of his tent. Because of the soldier’s refusal Old Hickory had him shot for insubordination. Using these two events I have woven a story of a ghost that made his presence known at various times during the years following the army’s trek through the forest that became Henderson County, Tennessee. The story basically follows the Beacum family that settled the land where the boy was buried with a pecan in his pocket that grew into the large tree. The family settled there during the 1830’s and the last surviving member died in the 1930’s. The family farm is offered for back taxes and is purchased by a young teacher who has a wife and son. The ghost continues his visits and only after the teacher enlists in the army and survives a Japanese prison camp does the story come to an end when he returns home. There is a story of Billy the Kid who surfaces on a farm in west Tennessee when he is an old man and adds a fictional account of how his death and burial were staged by the man who, history says killed him; sheriff Pat Garrett. I try to include a moral in each of the children’s stories as well as making them interesting.
Download and read online The Sedimentary Record of Meteorite Impacts in PDF and EPUB Although about 70 percent of known terrestrial meteorite impacts involve sedimentary rocks, the response of such rock to hyper- velocity impact is not well understand. Evans (Missouri State U., Springfield) introduces a dozen papers from a session on impact geology at the 2004 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting. Arranged by rocks' stratigraphic order (oldest to youngest) in proximal and distal settings, papers study topics including: characterization of impact sediments; a model for impact cratering processes; development of breccias (rock composed of sharp fragments embedded in a fine- grained matrix) in the Chesapeake Bay impact structure; and the method of impact stratigraphy applied to aging of the K-T boundary associated with mass extinction. The well-illustrated volume is not indexed.
Download and read online Five Star Trails Birmingham in PDF and EPUB In the first decade of the 21st century, Birmingham is building again on its natural resources, but this time it's not to fire steel-making smokestacks. Instead, where railroads ran and mines once burrowed into mountains, the healed landscape is being repurposed for hiking and biking. New and expanding venues around the city are providing more opportunities not only to get outside and exercise but also to appreciate the labor and industry that built the city. In Five-Star Trails: Birmingham local author Thomas Spencer leads readers to some of the best hikes around the city. Within a short drive from Birmingham, you can find yourself on an Appalachian mountain peak or on the banks of the Cahaba River as it broadens to snake through the Coastal Plain. You can visit old growth forest in the Sipsey Wilderness or hike down into the "Grand Canyon of the East" at Little River Canyon. And that's only the start. Across this landscape, you'll find a level of diversity of plant and animal species, some rare and endangered, that rivals anywhere in the North America.

At the same time he is following the career of sensational rookie golf star, Gary Sands. New York, Los Angeles, Kiev, and Florida’s Alligator Alley provide the backdrop to FBI investigations into a major Russian-based crime syndicate, with an unlikely connection to the USPGA Tour. Mike Peters, renowned sports photographer and a partner in the international crime consortium uses the prestigious Pro Golf Tour as cover, through which he maintains a host of big-time connections in sports, business and government, to smooth the way for his group’s illicit trade, including the ruthless elimination of those who seek to expose him. A trail of homicides in Sydney Australia, Rio Grande Puerto Rico, Jersey City New Jersey, and Oakville Ontario, become known as the “Golf Murders”. Each killing has occurred in conjunction with a major golf tournament being held at the same time, in each of those cities. Fast paced blistering action and blood-curdling horror, with loads of sexual tension, mark Ballantyne’s introduction to the international crime scene.

Download and read online 2 dimensional Seismic Refraction Mapping Study of the Cretaceous Paleogene Boundary Complex from the Brazos Texas Section in PDF and EPUB Many scientific studies have been conducted on the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (KTB) in the Gulf coast region and, in particular, the Brazos River section in Falls County, Texas. Despite this, there remains much to be learned about the KTB and its depositional environment. Study of the KTB has been multidisciplinary, primarily in the fields of sedimentology and paleontology. Some researchers in these disciplines have questioned the consensus view of the placement of the KTB and subsequent interpretation of the timing of depositional events and mass extinction events. Geophysical methods have potential to provide additional understanding of the physical properties of the KTB. To date, study of the KTB has relied on point data and borehole information to create cross sections of the complex. Seismic refraction surveys can provide spatially continuous information on susburface horizons located adjacent to the KTB. In this study, seismic first-arrival traveltimes are processed with a tomographic modeling program to map the top of the hummocky cross-bedded sandstone (HCS), which is a key indicator of the deposition environment at the time of KTB boundary complex placement. The survey area is located at Cottonmouth Creek, a tributary of the Brazos River. Three seismic lines were surveyed, one across Cottonmouth Creek, and two parallel to the creek on either side. The data from the two parallel lines were processed using the 2-D seismic refraction tomography algorithm of Zelt and Smith. The reconstructed depth to the HCS in the survey area is approximately 6 m, with layer seismic velocities of 364, 1800, and 2200 m/s, respectively. Seismic tomography successfully mapped the HCS layer and reveals approximately 1 m amplitude undulations vertically and undulations on the order of several m horizontally. These variations are consistent with exposed surfaces of the HCS in the creek bed. Seismic refraction has been utilized successfully herein to map a key buried indicator, namely the top of the HCS layer, associated with the KTB complex. A detailed 3-D seismic refraction survey at this site is recommended to generate a high-resolution 2-D terrain map of the top of the HCS layer.
