Download and read online Development of Sensory Systems in PDF and EPUB This preface is addressed to the reader who wishes to inquire into the prevailing concepts, hypotheses and theories about development of sensory systems and wants to know how they are exemplified in the following chapters. I believe that science is hypothesis and theory and that the growth and evolution of any branch of science can be measured by the degree to which its theories have been reified. By that standard, one must conc1ude that developmental neuro biologie is in its infancy. The rapid accumulation of observations which has occurred in this branch of science in the past century leads to progress only to the extent that the facts validate or falsify hypotheses. The following chapters show that we have a plethora of facts but a dearth of hypotheses. Another index of the maturity of any branch of science is its level of historical self-awareness. Because the history of any branch of science is essentially the history of ideas and of the rise and fall of theories, the level of historical awareness is related to the extent to which reification of its hypothetical constructs has advanced. It is largely because few theories of development of sensory systems, or indeed, of developmental neurobiology, have progressed far in the process of reification that the his tory of developmental neurobiology remains unwritten. The subject of this volume is hardly mentioned in the many books devoted to the history of related disciplines.
Download and read online Listeria Listeriosis and Food Safety Third Edition in PDF and EPUB Since the second edition of Listeria, Listeriosis, and Food Safetywas published in 1999, the United States has seen a 40 percent decline in the incidence of listeriosis, with the current annual rate of illness rapidly approaching the 2010 target of 2.5 cases per million. Research on this food-borne pathogen, however, has continued unabated, concentrating in the last five years on establishing risk assessments to focus limited financial resources on certain high-risk foods. Listeria, Listeriosis, and Food Safety, Third Edition summarizes much of the newly published literature and integrates this information with earlier knowledge to present readers with a complete and current overview of foodborne listeriosis. Two completely new chapters have been added to this third edition. The first deals with risk assessment, cost of foodborne listeriosis outbreaks, and regulatory control of the Listeria problem in various countries. The second identifies specific data gaps and directions for future research efforts. All of the chapters from the second edition have been revised, many by new authors, to include updated information on listeriosis in animals and humans, pathogenesis and characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes, methods of detection, and subtyping. The text covers the incidence and behavior of Listeria monocytogenes in many high-risk foods including, fermented and unfermented dairy products, meat, poultry, and egg products, fish and seafood products, and products of plant origin. Upholding the standard of the first two editions, Listeria, Listeriosis, and Food Safety, Third Edition provides the most current information to food scientists, microbiologists, researchers, and public health practitioners.

Download and read online A Synchronic and Diachronic Study of the Grammar of the Chinese Xiang Dialects in PDF and EPUB This is the first book in Chinese linguistics which discusses the grammar of a dialect group, in this case the Xiang dialect spoken in Hunan, from both a synchronic and diachronic prespective. The author uses new data and new frameworks to present her analysis. The synchronic part covers contemporary grammar across localities within the Xiang-speaking area by using the methods and theories of comparative and typological linguistics. The diachronic analysis reconstructs earlier grammatical systems based mainly on modern data but also on historical written records, and analyses the development of the syntactic systems of the Xiang dialects, adopting the methods and theories of historical linguistics and grammaticalization. The discussions in this book raise new issues on dialect research which have not yet been fully acknowledged by Chinese dialectologists. The author shows, for example, how the earlier layers of grammar may be reconstructed on the basis of modern data, and how the path of grammaticalization of functional words may be traced. The discussions reveal that the Xiang dialect group forms a transitional zone between northern and southern dialects. The syntactic constructions in these two areas often co-exist or are mingled in Xiang. Thus, the grammatical constructions in different localities of the Xiang dialect group often provide a bridge connecting the constructions of northern and southern Chinese, or Modern Chinese and Chinese of earlier periods. This book is of interest to scholars and students who are working on grammar, dialectology, historical linguistics, comparative linguistics, typological linguistics, and grammaticalization, as well as those researchers focusing on language policy, language acquisition, and education.
