Download and read online Processor Architecture in PDF and EPUB Today's microprocessors are the powerful descendants of the von Neumann 1 computer dating back to a memo of Burks, Goldstine, and von Neumann of 1946. The so-called von Neumann architecture is characterized by a se quential control flow resulting in a sequential instruction stream. A program counter addresses the next instruction if the preceding instruction is not a control instruction such as, e. g. , jump, branch, subprogram call or return. An instruction is coded in an instruction format of fixed or variable length, where the opcode is followed by one or more operands that can be data, addresses of data, or the address of an instruction in the case of a control instruction. The opcode defines the types of operands. Code and data are stored in a common storage that is linear, addressed in units of memory words (bytes, words, etc. ). The overwhelming design criterion of the von Neumann computer was the minimization of hardware and especially of storage. The most simple implementation of a von Neumann computer is characterized by a microar chitecture that defines a closely coupled control and arithmetic logic unit (ALU), a storage unit, and an I/O unit, all connected by a single connection unit. The instruction fetch by the control unit alternates with operand fetches and result stores for the AL U.
Download and read online Abecedarian Insectarium in PDF and EPUB It started with the yellow jacket wasp I found in the street. Even though it was dead, it had such an animated quality, almost cartoon-like. I carefully cradled it in my hand and was immediately inspired to paint it. Soon cicada were emerging, leaving their scarab-like shell behind. Dragonflies were hovering about my head. My insect treasures mounted; firefly, butterfly, beetle, ladybug and more, arousing my inner scientist. The local library and bookstore provided my trove of compelling facts and educational information. A journal of bugs and insects took shape. What followed was a selection of bugs from a to z. I wanted to hold a special book in my hand recognizing the beauty of nature. So I created my own, “Abecedarian Insectarium, Bugs and Insects A to Z”.

Download and read online The BUGS Book in PDF and EPUB Bayesian statistical methods have become widely used for data analysis and modelling in recent years, and the BUGS software has become the most popular software for Bayesian analysis worldwide. Authored by the team that originally developed this software, The BUGS Book provides a practical introduction to this program and its use. The text presents complete coverage of all the functionalities of BUGS, including prediction, missing data, model criticism, and prior sensitivity. It also features a large number of worked examples and a wide range of applications from various disciplines. The book introduces regression models, techniques for criticism and comparison, and a wide range of modelling issues before going into the vital area of hierarchical models, one of the most common applications of Bayesian methods. It deals with essentials of modelling without getting bogged down in complexity. The book emphasises model criticism, model comparison, sensitivity analysis to alternative priors, and thoughtful choice of prior distributions—all those aspects of the "art" of modelling that are easily overlooked in more theoretical expositions. More pragmatic than ideological, the authors systematically work through the large range of "tricks" that reveal the real power of the BUGS software, for example, dealing with missing data, censoring, grouped data, prediction, ranking, parameter constraints, and so on. Many of the examples are biostatistical, but they do not require domain knowledge and are generalisable to a wide range of other application areas. Full code and data for examples, exercises, and some solutions can be found on the book’s website.

Download and read online Workflow Management Systems and Interoperability in PDF and EPUB Workflow management systems enjoy increasing popularity due to their ability to coordinate and streamline complex organizational processes within organizations of all sizes. Control of these processes allows an organization to reengineer and improve or adapt them. Interest in workflow management systems was demonstrated in the early 1990s by an increased number of commercial products in an estimated $2 billion market. This book addresses recent advances in workflow management systems. Based on a NATO workshop held in 1997, it is an integrated collection of papers by leading international researchers. Topics emphasized include interoperability, Internet technologies to improve system capabilities, scalable and dynamic cooperation technologies, and workflow system prototypes.

Download and read online Language Proficiency in PDF and EPUB Louis A. Arena University of Delaware Newark, DE This monograph contains select, revised, and invited papers which deal with the topic, Language Proficiency: Defining, Teaching, and Testing. This topic was the theme of the eighth annual symposium held at the University of Delaware. The papers contained in this volume are invited papers or were originally scheduled for presentation and/or presented at the eighth annual Delaware Symposium on Language Studies. The papers combine research con ducted in the areas of teaching, testing, and defining second language pro ficiency within the profession of applied linguistics. They are divided into three principal sections: "Applied Linguistics and Language Pro ficiency", "Language Proficiency in Reading and Writing", and "Testing for Language Proficiency". In Part I, Paul Angelis' "Applied Linguistics: Realities and Projections re the Teaching Profession'; sketches a historical portrait of Applied Linguistics, its definition, presence, and role in the profession that teaches second language proficiency. Angelis concludes that Applied Linguistics is still a young discipline in terms of substance, organization, and strategy, and that these three components will determine the prospects for the future of applied linguistics re the teaching profession. The next six papers address the issue of second language proficiency from various points of view. Kensaku Yoshida's essay "Knowing vs Believing vs Feeling: Studies on Japanese Bilinguals" concludes that some Japanese bilinguals are actually not necessarily bilingual because they very often face problems requiring other kinds of proficiency, i. e.
